Passerine

A cardinal is considered a passerine. It is a classification. Almost half of all birds fall into this class They are perching birds. Song Birds.

The word passerine comes from the root word passer. Latin for sparrow or other smallish bird. I have never thought of the cardinal as a smaller bird but compared to wild turkeys or crows I guess it is.
